My very dear biographee Pedro Regalin, of Churrascaria Imperador, whose book we launched last year, said goodbye on January 9 of this year, at the age of 87.

In the many conversations I had with Pedro, he left some valuable lessons for the younger ones. Among them:

“The pen is lighter than the hoe.”

“Life is not easy, it is not a bed of roses.”

“If you don't work when you're young, you'll work when you're old.”

“At the end of the rush, I don't know whose money it is” (meaning that, in the restaurant, everyone must be treated well; you cannot make distinctions).

“Work and be honest.”

“It took me three harvests to buy my pickup truck. You have to know how to save.”

“If I don't like it, I don't serve it to others” (on the success of the barbecue). “The meat has to be of quality.”

“Studying is very important, but it isn't everything; you have to have vision and love for what you do.”

“If one is willing, two won't fight. We have to take things easy. The flaws, we leave aside” (on the success of the partnership at the steakhouse).

“The advertising that is worth the most is word of mouth. That goes a long way… I accept the compliments about the place, but I pay close attention to the complaints, to see where we went wrong.”

“We always thought: ‘Is it tough? It is, but let's go!’ If today brought little, you have to work even harder to recover tomorrow.”

“Life is knowing how to stay with the ones we love.”

“You have to work, you have to go out, and you have to make love. Otherwise, the couple doesn't live well.”

“In the end it will all work out. Be patient.”
